Cthulhu Character Design | Game Creation 2 | Gnomon
For my Game Creation 2 final project at Gnomon, I had a 10-week timeline to complete an environment design. However, as a character artist at heart, I decided to challenge myself by focusing on a character that also served as the environment's centerpiece—a Cthulhu-inspired creature, blending character art with environmental storytelling.
The design drew inspiration from a sculpture by Lee Joyner, whose ability to infuse his creatures with human-like qualities resonated with me. I also explored Jakub Chechelskis' interpretation of a Cthulhu-like creature, which sparked further inspiration. Regarding real-life references, I studied the textures and forms of hairless cats, monkeys, and marine life like squid and octopus to capture the feel of loose, textured skin.
For the environment, I utilized a block-out of a boat created by Ben Wilkinson. This served as the foundation, and by replacing each piece with Megascans assets, I was able to add more detail and depth. One of the biggest challenges was mimicking snow—its delicate, detailed texture while maintaining the deserted atmosphere. The scene was designed to resemble a crashed arctic shoreline, with the environment crafted to complement the creature's silhouette and enhance the storytelling.
This project allowed me to push my skills as a character artist and broadened my understanding of how characters can be integrated into their environments to tell a deeper story.
